Welcome

Welcome to the Géza Marton Doctoral School!

The Géza Marton Doctoral School of Legal studies, University of Debrecen was established in September 2006. The Doctoral School currently offers one doctoral program: Changes in the State and Law in Central and Eastern Europe.

Ensuring scientific succession

One of the goals of our doctoral program is to contribute to the training of the next generation of scholars in the field of political science and law.

Developing practical knowledge

We also want to respond to the call towards PhD degrees to be an expression of a high level of abstraction, a sense of how to apply scientific results, and knowledge in practical work. Over the past two decades, to our great delight, practicing judges and prosecutors, court and prosecutor's office clerks, as well as professionals working in public administration have successfully pursued PhD studies and obtained doctoral degrees at our university.

Developing research skills

Our goal is to develop applied research skills in professionals who can apply their highly qualified knowledge at a specific stage of their career in the relevant field of public administration or legal practice.

We develop skills that enable those who are suited to it to apply theoretical knowledge alongside empirical and other academic methods in a targeted and comprehensive manner, and enable them to produce original and monographic work on specific topics.

We are convinced that qualified judges, prosecutors, lawyers, public administrators, managers, and strategists need such personal capacities. According to the experience of developed countries, they can gain a more favourable position in their careers, and their knowledge may even be directly recognized by the "market."

In order to ensure continuous high-quality professional work at our doctoral school, we support the admission of a maximum of three PhD students per supervisor during an admission period, and at the end of each semester we organize a research forum to evaluate the professional progress of our students, which is mandatory for both students and their supervisors. We consider it important that our students' professional publication activities be transparent, therefore, starting January 1, 2013, we will gradually require all our students to use the MTMT database (Hungarian Academic Works Repository) to keep an up-to-date record of their publications.”
